It has been forever since I have posted to this blog. This year I hope to change all of that.

When we last left off, I was in the middle of a huge built in desk, which consumed most of time, and working, and being a mom, etc, you know the drill.

This week I will be posting the results of that built in desk along with some other updates to the house we USED to live in. That's right folks! We have moved yet again. This time we were transferred to sunny Phoenix, AZ. So, now I will be providing updates to my home here and other crafting adventures.

I'm looking forward to getting back on track with my blog and sharing my experiences with you.

One room. One day at a time.
I have been busy working on building a built in desk for my back office. If you are out in the bloggin world, then you may have heard of this amazing woman, Sandra, from sawdustgirl.com and you may have even seen my work on there. Head on over and check out my diary entries, under Cara's desk, here!
Not necessarily because it was the brightest room in the house, but more because it is the first room in the house when you walk in the front door. I also work from home and my office looks directly into the yellow abyss and was giving me a headache. Therefore, on Friday night, I loaded up my daughter and husband and headed to our neighborhood Home Depot and purchases everything we needed to get this room tackled. I had been surfing Houzz for some time and had really fell in love with the grey walls for the dining room. Here are a few of photos that inspired our color selections.

This is the first time that I have decided to make a departure from my safe colors of red, gold, and green and go with something totally different in this house. My husband and I were ready for a change, and hey, we are in New Orleans now, so why not go with some bolder colors?? Ultimately we decided to go with a darker gray and a teal/blue accent color. I love the first photo above, but the color was a little too blue for my taste, and I didn't have the step ceiling. So I selected a color with more green in it and used it on one wall only.

Now, the previous owners had added the crown and baseboards and colors, however, they didn't caulk any of the trim and weren't not necessarily accurate in their painting techniques, therefore we had a lot of work ahead of us. We decided that we would rather do things right and not fast and have a better outcome. Now, you will see a lot of boxes in the photos, again we have only been in the house about 3 weeks and we are still unpacking, but we are underway in our remodel.

Here is a rundown of what we did to the room:

Wiped down all of the crown and baseboards with spic and span to remove the years of dust and dirt build up.

Caulked all of the crown and baseboards

Used dry decking to build up the corners of the window sills where the previous owners dogs and chewed them off. (in the future these boards will eventually be replaced)

Pulled out all of the nails the previous owner had put in and filled with dry decking

Sanded down huge texture globs that were left from the previous owners

Repainted all crown and baseboards

Repainted back of front door and closet door

Painted walls grey, two coats

Painted wall teal, two coats

Removed old cream switches and plugs and re-wired both with new white ones.

Removed old cream switch and plug faces and replaced with fresh white ones.

Leveled out table and china cabinet with shims (because the flooring is so unlevel)

Unpacked all china dishes and put in cabinet.

Still on the to-do list for this room:

Hire electrician to come out and remove the old chandelier and hang the two that I have ordered. Here are the two that I ordered to go above the table from Overstock.com

Find an entry way rug

Buy and hang a new entry way light

Buy and hang the new single light spot light that shines on the china cabinet

Hang wall decor

Order and install plantation shutters!

So, we still have a ways to go, but we are getting there. I want this room wrapped up by the end of March, so you know, like in 13 days!!
The moving wasn't all that bad.

We were relocated to the New Orleans area for my husband's career. It was nice to have a company come in and pack everything and move us, but now is the fun (?) part of moving, the unpacking. I am so grateful that someone else packed up my belongings, but seriously, they use a lot of paper and boxes!!

But in the spirit of keeping things real around here, I am posting several pictures of our house in it's current state. NOT because I think it looks great or anything, but mainly because we have a lot of plans for this house and I wanted some "Before" photos. Besides which, if I was going to wait until everything looked "picture perfect", we would all be waiting for a very, very, very long time. We have been in this house for 2 1/2 weeks and I am almost done unpacking most of the boxes. However, unpacking does not equate to decorated or organized :) My husband and I both work full-time outside of the home, so unpacking has been done at night and on the weekends. Also, we downsized from over 3,000 to a little over 2,400, so I have lost my craft room and separate office, but like I said we have some plans in store for this house to make up for the lost rooms and storage. My husband and I are excited to see our plans come to life and make this house our home. I hope you will join us on our journey. We have a budget, a saw, and a plan, and now we just need to make time :)

Here is our house as it is today, enjoy!
I love looking through it and finding new and different things to try my hand at. The latest craft item that I have tackled is this sign that I made for my mother's birthday. I have one little girl and my brother has a little boy. My daughter and my nephew are the best of friends when they are together. Even though one is 6 and one is 7 and live 5 hours a part, you would not know it when they get together. They love each other so much. It warms my heart to see my daughter have this special relationship. So, it is true, when you go to Grandma's, cousins become best friends. I took artistic liberty with the saying and changed it slightly from the original version. You see the original version here.

For my version, I started with a wooden plaque from WalMart, three different shades of acrylic paint (black, cream, and reddish color). I cut all of the letters and flourishes with my Cricut (using SCAL). I used a free svg file for the flourishes that I found on the Internet. I am going to try to find it again and link it here. I painted the board black, then cream over it and rubbed in some of the red color for accent. I used Mod Podge to glue down the letters, and then I used three coats on top. I love how it came out. I also have a black ribbon waiting to attach to it to use as a hanger.
So, my husband spent the week before New Year's building a baby doll bed for our daughter's American Girl doll (because I refuse to spend mucho $$ on the AG brand) and he did a wonderful job building and painting it. You will just have to excuse the large stuffed animal and shoes in the background. What can I say, we are a real family and my house isn't always picture perfect! :)

I then proceeded to find some fabric that I used in my daughter's curtains and made a mattress for the bed.
Last but not least I finally made the baby doll quilt last night (very late last night), but none the less, last Friday. I had a small charm pack from Hobby Lobby and I cut them in half (so 2 1/2 inch squares and made a simple patch quilt. I then sashed it with some left over fabrics I had used on my mother in law's quilt, and I had a 1/4 of the backing fabric, which I had to piece together on the back to finish the backing. I did an all over free motion quilt design to quilt it. I used scraps for the binding, which was the first time I have done that and I think I like it. It's hard to tell in the photos, but the little quilt is pink and browns.
All in all, I would say the project was a success since my daughter loved it! I gave it to her as an early Valentine's Day gift! I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine's Day as well. (Note: The plans for the bed and mattress were from Ana White's website. She has wonderful designs on there. Ana White)
She is doing much better this year at the sport and understanding how the game is played, etc. So, in honor of their first game, I embroidered each of them a towel with their name on it and a big bee. Now, to explain, the name of their team is the "Bee" Ballerz. Cute, huh. Wish I could take credit for that name, but alas I can not. That was a stroke of genius on the behalf of their Coach Mandy. They have the cutest yellow and black striped socks and another sock with bees on them. They are so cute! The towels were a hit with the coaches and the players and it got the season started on an upbeat mood!
I have actually completed a lot of crafts this year. Some I finished up literally minutes before they had to be given as gifts so I wasn't able to take a picture of the finished product, but I have listed out everything that I can remember and added a picture if I have it. **More pictures to come later**

So, let's start with my recap!

Ella Shae's baby quilt. I made a baby quilt for my cousins baby. Unfortunately all I have are photos of it in the works, and the photos of the finished quilt were lost.

I wanted to share with you my video tutorial for the baby shower invitations that I made for my friend. She is having twins, one boy and one girl, so I had to come up with something that was gender neutral, etc. I used the Life's a Party Cricut cartridge and used the "bib" cut at 2 inches. I hope you enjoy the video! I also added the link below in case you can't click on the video below.
Little baby Ella. She is a beautiful baby. To celebrate her arrival, I made her a quilt. I used fabric from my local quilt shop and followed a tutorial from Amanda Jean on Moda Bake Shop to make the quilt. Here are photos of the quilt top. I will have to upload photos of the finished quilt, along with the matching burp cloth, two bibs, and booties with the left over fabric. I hope she loves them!
I enjoyed great conversations with my friends and watched the great commercials and helped regulate the kiddos. But, it was a great time at our friends house. We each had to bring something to share, so I made chocolate dipped strawberries and then piped on the lacing of the footballs. It was my first time piping, so it wasn't as clean as I had hoped. Oh well, practice makes perfect. Even though they aren't perfect, they are real, and I wanted to share my recipe with you because everyone commented on how the chocolate didn't crack away from the strawberry and they like it.
What you need:
double boiler
water
milk chocoloate chips
semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 TBS shortening
wax paper
white chocolate chips
sandwich bag
toothpicks
strawberries

In the double boiler, in the bottom part add about 2 inches of water and bring to a simmer. In the top, I mixed about 5.5 ounces of milk chocolate chips (1/2 bag) and 5.5 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips (1/2 bag), and the 2 TBS of shortening. Start stirring and moving the chocolate around so that it never gets stuck or baked on the bottom. Once the entire mixture is melted, turn down the heat to low. Stir the mixture as needed during the dipping phase to keep it smooth.

While that is melting, wipe off your strawberries, but do not wash them. If there is any moisture on the strawberries, the chocolate will not adhere to the strawberries. Stick a toothpick in the top of the strawberry. This is your handle for dipping. Dip the strawberries in the mixture and place them on wax paper to cool. After the were all done being dipped I placed them in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes to cure all the way.

Take about 1/4 cup (or less) of the white chocolate chips and place in the sandwich bag. Heat at 50% power in the microwave for about 1 minute. You will want to pause it at 30 seconds and squish everything around to help with the melting. When it comes out of the microwave, carefully cut the smallest pit of the corner of the bag off and this will be your piping bag.

I piped the laces on and then let them sit out for about another 30 minutes before packing them up to take to the party! Hope you enjoy!
I decided to try my hand at it. I used publisher and created subway art for my laundry room. It is a jpg, but if you would like thepublisher version to edit for your laundry room or whatever, then just email me at carlyn225@yahoo.com and I will email you the file. I will try to post a picture of it when I get it hung in the frame. I actually have it printed and in a frame, I am just waiting to hang it on a nail.

In our house we have instituted a new laundry policy. Each person has their own day to have their laundry done. Granted Caitlyn is 5, but still she has learned that when she takes clothes off they go straight in her hamper or I don't wash it on Tuesday. My husband right now handles his own laundry during the winter. Once summer picks up and he is doing more outside duties, then I will probably pick up the slack for him. He also does sheets on Monday, and I do towels on Friday. We NEVER do laundry on the weekend now and it is so nice! I also only do 2 loads for each person, 1 light colored clothes and 1 dark color clothes. This system has really cut down on me running through the house to gather all of the "blues", then washing, and folding, then running all the way back through the house to redistribute all of the blues. This way everything that goes into the washer is one person's from one room and it all goes back to that room. So there you go, my laundry tip for you all!
Oh well, I'm sure they will get better over time. Anyways onto the layout, I made this layout of my daughter's first day of Kindergarten, and believe it or not it is recent and she is still in kindergarten. But, don't fool yourself into thinking that I am that caught up in my scrapbook layouts, because I am far from it. I really don't know where I am with my layouts. I tend to scrap what inspires me and then at one of my scrapbook retreats I will sit down this year and figure out where I have holes and fill them in.

For this layout I used the Celebrations Cricut cartridge to create the scalloped square.

I used the Gypsy Font for the "First day of" and welded the letters together. I am getting together my gumption and trying out for Robyn's design team at the "My Pink Stamper". She has such wonderful things on her blog and I love her videos! Maybe one day I can be on there with her! So, here is my submission. I love the vintage valentines that people used to give in the 30's and 40's and this card was inspired by that.

As part of the challenge we had the following guidelines: we had to use Pink, Brown, and Green and our favorite cricut cartridge. Well, hands down, my favorite cartridge is A Child's Year. So to do the card, I used my new Birtday gift from my husband, the Gypsy, and used the scalloped blackout square from Plantin Schoolbook to make a 5x5 scalloped square, then I used A Child's Year and used the valentine on page 30 (the icon) and roughly centered it in the middle of the scalled square. It is aproximately 3.5 inches tall. Then I cut it out. :) Awsomeness!

So, here is the recipe for this card:

Die Cuts With a View Pink #3 Cardstock cut at 5.5x5.5 (this is the base)

Die Cuts With a View Pink #2 Cardstock cut at 5.5x5,5 for the gypsy cut above

craftstore Brown cardstock cut at apx. 4x4 attached to the back side of the scalloped square

Then I stamped, using the Autumn Leaves "Swirls by Rhonna Farrer" small corner stamp, in Chestnut Roan ColorBox ink, randomly over the heart cut out.

Then I stamped using the same swirl stamp in Blush (Close to my Heart ink) over the scalloped square.

Next I inked the edges of all three pieces, the heart, the scalloped square, and the large cut square with a sponge and Chestnut roan ink.

I then stamped the scalloped word outline in Chestnut Roan using the Annotations stamp set and the "Be Mine" from the Thoughtful Seasons stamp set in Tulip ink. (Annotations, Thoughtful Seasons and Tulip ink all from Close to My Heart). I then cut out using my scissors the sentiment.

Using Recollections Foam Adhesive Strips, I popped up the heart, and the sentiment on the scalloped square.

Then using the same foam adhesive, I popped up the entire scalloped square.

To add some sparkle, I randomly used "Fruit Punch" Stickles to go over some of the stamped swirls to give it some texture and interest.

Last, I tied a small green bow and using a mini glue dot attached it the heart.

This is a flat valentine card. Your personal message would be written on the back of it.

Please leave me comments if you like/don't like the cards. This is my first submission for a design team, and I while I have a long shot of making it, I would welcome your feedback for improvement so I can continue to apply for other design teams until I find one that will have me!

Thanks for looking,

CaraLyn
Cara-Lynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18154541363624028793noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9043262559783384555.post-68889749393275234122011-01-01T09:26:00.000-06:002011-01-01T09:26:30.968-06:00Happy New Year!I love the New Year!! It gives us a time to reflect, to ponder the future and set some goals! One goal of which is for me to get on here and upload the dozens of photos and tutorials that I have been working on and collecting. I am a crafter at heart and want to use this blog as an outlet for my creations. I recently (as in the past two days) turned a spare bedroom into my crafting room. I look forward to all of the things that will take place in there (including spending time with my family). 2011 is going to be a great year and I look forward to blogging with you!Cara-Lynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18154541363624028793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9043262559783384555.post-36956489087734879802010-09-30T09:55:00.000-05:002010-09-30T09:55:21.473-05:00Here we go....So, for some time now I have been wanting to create a blog of the crafty things I do. It is really more or less a journal of things I love to do in my spare time. I will in the next few weeks be sharing a tutorial for the burp clothes I make, to start us off. Please feel free to link to my blog. I hope you will be inpsired by what I do! Thanks for jumping on to check me out!Cara-Lynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18154541363624028793noreply@blogger.com0
